What is a community garden?
Mission
The Buellton Community Garden (BCG) shall be dedicated to supporting and operating community gardens for the residents of the Buellton area ("Area") for the promotion of community, education and development of sustainable, ornamental and edible plant culture. Community gardens provide a space to garden, improve the quality of life by creating opportunities for cross-cultural and intergenerational connections among residents of the area, beautifying neighborhoods, cultivating food, preserving green space and being in touch with nature.
History of the Garden
The Buellton Community Garden was founded by Alexandra “Annie” Yakutis and Greg Erickson, who envisioned transforming a vacant lot into a space for growing food and building community connections. With support from local volunteers, businesses, and the City of Buellton, the garden grew to include 46 raised beds, accessible plots, and beautiful artist-designed gates. Officially opened on September 7, 2024, it continues to be a vibrant hub for gardening, education, and neighborhood collaboration.
Community Impact
The Buellton Community Garden provides a shared space for residents to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers while fostering education, collaboration, and neighborhood connections. Located on the city-owned lot at 480 Central Avenue, the garden benefits not only its members but also the wider community through beautification, sustainable gardening practices, and opportunities for social and cultural engagement.
